Collection: Planters & Window Boxes

A planter organizes the outdoor space before the plant inside it does. This selection brings together planters, troughs, terracotta pots, and decorative vessels for gardens, terraces, roof terraces, and interiors—including the handcrafted Belgian vessels by Atelier Vierkant and Domani.

The materials differ primarily in weight and how they behave in frost. Ceramic and terracotta look warm and stand heavy; concrete offers the greatest stability and stays where it was placed even in the wind. Fiberglass is the lightweight alternative for roof terraces and balconies where load-bearing capacity is limited. Metal looks modern and, depending on the alloy, requires a look at rust protection; wood and teak bring a natural look and last longer if maintained. Where vessels are to spend the winter outdoors, frost resistance is explicitly part of the specifications worth asking about.

As for shape: round vessels stand on their own, while square ones can be arranged in rows and along edges. Flat, wide-open bowls look good from above and structure a surface without blocking the view; tall vessels bring the plant to eye level and take on the task that a low wall would otherwise perform. In any case, the drainage hole determines the plant—without drainage, water stands, and waterlogging is the most common reason that plantings do not survive the winter.

We advise landscape architects, garden planners, interior designers, and decorators as well as the catering industry, hotel industry, and private households.

FAQ – The 5 Most Common Questions About Planters

What size should a planter be?

The size of the planter depends on the plant and the location:

  • Houseplants: The size of the vessel should match the root ball
  • Outdoor plants: larger = more soil volume, better water and nutrient supply
  • Terraces and balconies: consider weight and space

Tip: Better choose slightly larger so that plants have enough space for healthy growth.

Do planters need a drainage hole?

A drainage hole prevents waterlogging and root rot:

  • Outdoor vessels: definitely use a drainage hole
  • Indoor vessels: can also be used without a hole, but then fill with a drainage layer (e.g. gravel)
  • Water control: use saucers or trays to avoid damage

Tip: Waterlogging is the most common cause of plant problems.

What shape should a planter be?

The shape of the planter affects growth, water balance, and appearance:

  • Round: ideal for individual plants or small arrangements
  • Square / rectangular: space-saving, good for balconies or groupings
  • Deep: for plants with long roots, e.g. tomatoes or shrubs
  • Flat / wide: for succulents, herbs, or ground cover

Tip: Adapt the shape and size to the plant and location—this makes care and watering easier.

Are large planters also suitable for balconies?

Large planters can also be used on balconies, but please note:

  • Weight: check the load-bearing capacity of the balcony
  • Space requirements: leave enough room to move
  • Drainage: drainage holes are important to avoid waterlogging

Tip: Lightweight materials such as plastic or fiberglass make handling on balconies easier.

Which materials are best suited for planters?

The choice of material affects durability, maintenance, and appearance:

  • Ceramic / terracotta: frost-resistant, classic, somewhat heavy
  • High-quality plastic: lightweight, easy to care for, weather-resistant
  • Metal / stainless steel: modern, robust, rust protection may be necessary
  • Wood / teak: natural look, weather-resistant if maintained
  • Concrete: very stable, ideal for large vessels, frost-resistant

Tip: Choose a material that suits the location, weight, and desired style.
