Terra Preta by Myface – Outdoor Furniture in Iroko, Marble and Cast Aluminum

Terra Preta is the new outdoor collection from the Portuguese manufacturer Myface: 19 pieces of furniture in nine series, handcrafted in Portugal, made from iroko wood, marble, cast aluminium and coated stainless steel. The name refers to terra preta, the fertile black soil of the Amazon – a well-known symbol of the connection between earth, craftsmanship and community, which underpins all the designs in the collection. Each piece of furniture comes with a custom-fit protective cover and is made exclusively to order.

Many of the series bear names from the indigenous languages of South America. In Guarani culture, aty refers to a place of sharing, itá means stone, and tupi refers to the indigenous people of the same name. These references are more than labels; they define the collection’s ethos: furniture as places of community, materials in their purest form, and contours reminiscent of erosion, weaving and organic growth.

Design and Form

Terra Preta uses a calm, organic design language. Solid wood frames anchor the seating furniture to the ground, broad lines follow the movement of the body, and silhouettes remain low and relaxed. Nothing appears engineered or technical; the furniture is more reminiscent of hand-shaped shelters than mass-produced products. Fine details in coated stainless steel add precise accents against the warm wood tones without disrupting the calm of the composition.

Within this shared design language, each series develops its own dialect. Kaya focuses on substantial, generous volumes. Tupi translates the weaving techniques of indigenous craft culture into side panels made from marine rope. Ori follows the golden ratio, achieving naturally balanced proportions. Bamboo uses sculptural legs to evoke the organic form of bamboo canes, while Itá and Zaya recall stone and erosion – irregular contours shaped by the passage of time. The result is a collection that holds together as a whole while offering a wide range of expressions.

Materials: Iroko, Marble, Cast Aluminium

The selection of materials follows a simple principle: a few honest materials that can remain outdoors permanently. Our overview of materials for garden furniture shows how the individual materials compare.

Iroko and Its Patina

Iroko is a West African hardwood that is frequently compared to teak because of its durability. It is extremely weather-resistant, dimensionally stable and suitable for year-round outdoor use. Like all hardwoods, iroko changes colour when exposed to the elements: left untreated, the surface gradually develops a silver-grey patina that does not weaken the wood but simply changes its appearance. To preserve the warm, golden-brown tone, the wood should be oiled regularly; those who allow the patina to develop will have furniture that visibly ages with its surroundings. In the Ori series, iroko is also available in a dark-stained version.

Marble and Tech Stone

The tables in the collection combine wood structures with natural stone or Tech Stone tops. Myface categorises the available marble and stone types: Marble I to IV groups the varieties by quality, from classics such as Carrara or Nero Marquina to rare natural stones. The specific variety is selected when ordering. Tech Stone is also available as an alternative – a robust, high-quality top material for outdoor use. Each stone top has its own veining – no two tables are alike.

Cast Aluminium and Stainless Steel

The sculptural Itá tables and the tops of the Zaya Coffee Table are made from solid cast aluminium. The material is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and completely weatherproof; the Itá is available with three patinated finishes: Green Patina, Brown Patina and Moss Patina. The Bamboo Dining Chair uses forged aluminium, with a frame that echoes the organic lines of bamboo canes. The connecting details on the wooden furniture are made from coated stainless steel – corrosion-resistant and used with deliberate restraint.

Outdoor Fabrics in Four Collections

The upholstery is designed for permanent outdoor use, with covers that are UV- and water-resistant. Myface offers outdoor fabrics in four collections – Natural, Premium, Lux and Signature – as well as outdoor leather. This allows each piece of seating in the collection to be configured with anything from a subtle natural tone to an expressive texture.

The Series at a Glance

Kaya – The Heart of the Collection

With six models, Kaya is the largest series in the collection and its design centrepiece: Sofa (207 cm), Single Sofa, Armchair, Chaise Longue and two sun loungers. At the core of every design is a solid, textured iroko frame; generous, substantial lines evoke the most fundamental ways of relaxing. The Kaya Sunbed measures 180 × 95 cm, while the Double Sunbed measures 190 × 180 cm and accommodates two people. The sofa, armchair and loungers share a seat or lounger height of 40 cm and can be freely combined.

Tupi – The Weave

The Tupi series includes a sofa (185 × 90 cm) and a lounge armchair. Its defining feature is woven side panels made from marine rope, inspired by the craft techniques of the Tupi people. The weave envelops those seated, while the solid iroko structure supports generous, weatherproof upholstery. Subtle stainless steel details maintain the balance between tradition and modernity.

Ori – The Golden Ratio

Ori is the dining series in the collection: a 320 cm dining table for up to twelve people, a dining chair with precisely tensioned rope on the back and sides, and a coffee table whose three interlocking tops weave wood and marble into a play of textures. All the designs follow the golden ratio. The dining table is available with a two-part top made of wood and stone or in a single material.

Bamboo – Lightness and Strength

Bamboo consists of a dining table and an upholstered dining chair. The sculptural legs of the table echo the organic forms of bamboo canes; the top and legs are available in iroko or marble. Myface makes the table in three sizes, from 190 × 100 cm to 320 × 140 cm – the largest version accommodates up to ten people. The chair adopts the motif in forged aluminium.

The Tables: Itá, Aty, Zaya and Taya

  • Itá – Coffee Table (112 cm) and Side Table (40 × 40 cm): sculptural solitaires made from solid cast aluminium with irregular forms and organic hollows, a tribute to the power of stone.
  • Aty – an iroko and marble lounge table in three sizes that can be freely combined; the name refers to a place of sharing in Guarani culture.
  • Zaya – an organically shaped top made from cast aluminium and marble or Tech Stone, on lacquered fibreglass legs, available in two sizes, as a single piece or as a pair.
  • Taya – a console (210 cm) made from solid iroko with connected shelf levels, inspired by the communal structures of Amazonian peoples; the top is available in iroko, marble or Tech Stone.

Astra – The Low Lounger

The Astra Sunbed complements the loungers in the Kaya series with a deliberately low silhouette: 180 × 81 cm, with a lounger surface at approximately 36 cm. The precisely shaped iroko structure incorporates metallic accents, while the generous upholstery makes the lounger the calmest piece of furniture in the collection – a design exploring the dialogue between light and raw material.

Outdoor Use

On a private terrace, Terra Preta works as a continuous landscape: the Kaya sofa and armchair form the lounge area, the Ori Coffee Table or an Aty in one of three sizes creates the centre, and the Itá Side Table can be moved wherever it is needed. Because all the series share the same materials, the groups can be mixed without disrupting the overall look.

By the pool, the loungers showcase their strengths. The Kaya Sunbed, Double Sunbed and low Astra Sunbed are designed for poolside use with weatherproof covers and corrosion-resistant details; the protective covers included in the delivery extend the season. In hotels and spas, the collection impresses with the same qualities – durable materials, made-to-order production and a design language that communicates calm rather than noise.

In garden architecture, the sculptural pieces stand as solitaires: an Itá Coffee Table in patinated cast aluminium or a Zaya set against a calm planting area appears less like furniture and more like a placed object. For those who think of outdoor spaces as a sequence of places – a dining area, a lounge, a retreat –, the nine series offer a solution for each of them.

Terra Preta in the Myface Brand

Myface makes its furniture in Portugal, with each piece handcrafted to order. Terra Preta consistently carries this ethos further, condensing it into its own narrative: natural materials, indigenous-inspired names and techniques, and a design language between erosion and weaving. Within the brand’s portfolio, the collection is thus its most earthy, handcrafted chapter. Our page on Myface Outdoor Furniture provides an overview of the brand and its other collections.
