Proper Teak Wood Care – The Guide

Teak – Why it Lasts for Generations

Teak is one of the most durable woods for outdoor use. Barlow Tyrie exclusively uses Grade A teak (Tectona grandis) from state-controlled Indonesian plantation cultivation (FLEGT/SVLK licensed). The natural oils in the heartwood protect against moisture, rot, and pests from within – entirely without chemical treatment.

Silvery Patina is Not a Flaw

Untreated teak changes color outdoors: over several months, the warm golden-brown turns into an elegant, silvery-gray patina. This is a natural, purely optical process caused by UV light and weather – stability and durability remain fully intact. Many customers consciously appreciate this matured look.

Maintaining the Golden Hue – Here's How

If you want to preserve the original golden hue, treat the wood once or twice per season with a high-quality teak oil or teak sealer. Before oiling, clean and dry the surface, then apply the oil thinly and evenly, removing any excess. Teak that has already grayed can be refreshed with a teak cleaner and then oiled.

Cleaning

  • Clean regularly with water, mild detergent, and a soft brush, in the direction of the grain.
  • Do not use high-pressure cleaners or abrasive agents – they open the wood fibers.
  • Treat stains (grease, red wine) promptly with a mild detergent.

Outdoors All Year Round

Teak furniture is weather and frost-resistant and can remain outdoors all year round. Breathable protective covers keep it clean; airtight covers should be avoided to prevent waterlogging.

Other Materials Briefly Explained

Barlow Tyrie also manufactures in 316 marine-grade stainless steel, powder-coated aluminum, and Textilene®/Sunbrella® fabrics. These are particularly easy to care for: wipe with water and mild detergent; for stainless steel, occasionally use a stainless steel care product; clean textile coverings with lukewarm water. Teak oil belongs exclusively on teak, not on metal or textile surfaces.
